What guidelines need to exist for communication with both parents and students? Ie. modes, frequency, etc
Besides the posts on the discussion board, please remember to include communication with students both about their grades and their work. What are appropriate forums? What forums (if any)are off limits? What do you do if a student crosses the line with you or another student in an electronic communication? How do you handle it when students disclose personal info--rmember this is much more likely in a digital setting. Also, how can we use the student portal to foster a culture of reflection and goal setting with students taking more responsibility for their own progress and learning?
What are the expectations o t teachers - expected to go on at night again?
If kids are commuinicating 24 hours a day - how long are we allowed to respond - Dec. 24 kid sends me an email. When do I have to respond to a kid's concern.
Do we allow students to use external systems, gmail or hotmail, or do we make them use the communication inside Blackboard. (They can communicate with all teachers through one area. Teachers can get in touch with any kid, even if it's not a kid in our class.)
Parent communication - how extensive does it need to get; parents will have their own parent account to oversee what their kids are doing.
Are we 9-12 expected to have all of our courses up and running in blackboard. But we'll use this space; use this instead of edmodo.
By september, what do we need to have up and running in blackboard We haven't been communicated to about what we are doing... How do we get kids to check into blackboard before coming to class - what will be the protocol or expectation that you would expect them to check it at night. How do we hold students accountable - we need to create student accountability guidelines - consequences After hours or during school hours. Do we have over riding power if kids put in a message viewable to all? Can I always see what kids are saying to each other (Nicole says no). We can't see kid-to-kid messages. Can kids find kids in other classes...how do we control inapprorpriate content? Is the school able to shut down those instant messaging forums kid to kid. Will this replace morning announcements? Can kids check here for them. We all need to address netiquette - kids need to know what is appropriate and inappropriate to put on the message systems in blackboard. If we can't see the kid-to-kid messages, can someone else see it - Is there a Big Brother? If we're conducting tests and assessments on blackboard, can kids send answers to each other. How do we prevent plagiarizing and cheating? In Blackboard, safe assign - kids submit and it checks to see how much has been cut and pasted from another site - but it doesn't catch cut and paste from other kids; kids can file share..if complete a graphic organizer, file share and everyone turn in the same completed graphic organizer. Where's the proof/evidence to show individuals are learning anything. (Last question above - students taking responsibility for their own learning...maybe they are taking others students' learning for their own.)
When do teachers get new laptops? Will parent emails be in blackboard automatically? Will we still be communicating with them in outlook? What is the expectation for how often we check it? What time? Examples of discussion boards from Lower Merion - Nick Burch is familiar with what some of the teachers did with those. If run a discussion board - do we go on and monitor - if they get off topic or inappropriate on a discussion board - is that the teacher's responsibility? What is the ease of communicating math/science language? Will students do all their work online or will they print out anything? Will it be harder to get kids to produce homework?
